The Martian is a book by Andy Weir that follows Mark Watney, a botanist who is trapped on Mars after the rest of the Ares 3 crew are forced to leave him behind. Watney relies on his impressive botany and science knowledge to survive.
I really liked this book. It had me laughing out loud at Watney’s wit one minute, and wondering how he was going to get out of this mess the next. It has the funniest, unexpected opening line of a book I have ever read. It’s disappointing that the characters on Earth weren’t written nearly as well as Mark. The writing was very science heavy, which I liked but some people probably wouldn’t. I really, really enjoyed reading this book, and I would like to read some equally funny books.
The Martian has been adapted into a movie, starring Matt Damon with a supporting cast of Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Donald Glover and Sean Bean. The movie was pretty good, but as with most things, the book was better.
Side-note, I really hate when book covers change to be the movie artwork, which is when Matt Damon’s face was over all of the books in the shop. Don’t you think the cover above is absolutely amazing?
