Adam’s Rib is a classic romantic comedy released in 1949, starring famous duo Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as one of their 9 films together. Spencer and Katharine play husband and wife lawyers who take opposing sides in an attempted murder case (which is based on a true story). The wonderful Judy Holliday (who was amazing in Born Yesterday in 1950) also stars in this movie, as the scorned lover of Tom Ewell who was having an affair with Jean Hagen (also in Singin’ in the Rain in 1952, as Lina Lamont, the screechy movie star).
Adam’s Rib seems to be very ahead of its time in terms of feminism. Katharine Hepburn actually started wearing trousers decades before it was fashionable for women to do so. If you have never seen an interview with Katharine Hepburn, they’re quite funny – she says exactly what she means.
This movie holds up well, there are a few things that are outdated, but mostly it’s still a funny movie that was very enjoyable.
