Dirk Gently; A Private Detective that Doesn’t Find Clues

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is now available on Netflix. It’s a BBC America show based on the Douglas Adams books. It’s very much the same sort of humour as the books but the story has been adapted and changed to suit television. It’s equal parts action and comedy, adorable and really really weird.

dirk-gentlySamuel Barnett plays the title character Dirk Gently. He is an English private detective that doesn’t find clues. He has a weak psychic ability where he can sense connections between seemingly disconnected events and people and things.

He’s also really freaking adorable.

elijah-woodElijah Wood plays Todd, a down and out bellhop. He’s broke, paying for the medication of his sister, unable to make rent. He then becomes the reluctant Assistfriend to Dirk Gently (who is like an adorable puppy who desperately needs someone to help him).

Elijah Wood is really good in this show, he plays the character really well. Does anyone think he looks really familiar though?

hannah-marksThe sister of Elijah Wood’s character is called Amanda and is played by Hannah Marks.

Amanda has a debilitating nerve disease, and Todd is paying for her medication.

farahThere’s a kickass female character called Farah (Jade Eshete). I’m not going to say too much about her because I don’t want to give too much away, but she is really awesome – and her hair is fucking fantastic.

bart-and-otherThis is Ken (left – played by Mpho Kaoho) and Bart (right – played by Fiona Dourif). Bart has kidnapped Ken, she’s sort of the same as but the opposite to Dirk Gently. Bart reminds me of Natasha Lyonne crossed with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn but with a sweet and bizarre vulnerability.

This is the Rowdy 3… No you haven’t lost your ability to count.. Just watch the show.

BBC America has announced there will be a season 2, which I am super pumped for. I really want to see where these characters go – I think this is my favourite cast of characters and their relationships (or interconnectedness) this year.

If you haven’t yet seen it, make sure you put it on your binge list for the holidays.
